Travel Between Realms

Methods listed here have been used to travel between realms. Current disposition of the object is included in the header.  The time portal is included at the end of the list.

Apprentice’s Wand (Active)

The Sorcerer's Apprentice just waves his hand, and a magic door appears to take Ingrid to the land where she will find Emma (4.08). The same door is found by Rumplestiltskin in the Mystery Mansion later on, providing a way back to Arendelle (4.11) Presumably it's not there any more, but it was never mentioned as being closed.

The Apprentice also creates a portal when he sends Lily to Earth (4.16). This is apparently a thing he can do, although not when he’s been weakened by being attacked by the Darkness (5.01)

Zelena later uses this wand to create portals to the Enchanted Forest. The wand was broken in the journey to the Land of Untold Stories, but fixed by Dr Jekyll and taken from him by Hyde. It was in Rumplestiltskin's possession (6.01), then the Evil Queen's (6.14); current holder unknown.

Author's Pen (Active)

One of the powers that come with Authorship is realm-hopping just by writing yourself there.

Blue Fairy's Sword (Active)

When charged with the magical power of a Savior, the sword is able to literally cut a passage through to the Black Fairy's realm. (6.16)

Cyclone  (Oz-specific)

Cyclones can be used to travel to and from the realm of Oz (Regina hijacked Zelena's in order to reach Camelot in S5).

A green-tinted cyclone carries infant Zelena from the Enchanted Forest to Oz (3.16); ditto Dorothy (3.19). Zelena uses the Apprentice’s magic wand (5.01) to summon a cyclone to Storybrooke, which she intends to use for transport back to Oz; Regina redirects it to Emma in the Enchanted Forest instead. Regina uses the same want to send Zelena back to Oz (5.12) from Storybrooke.

Another cyclone brings Ruby from Oz to the Underworld (5.17) via a tracking spell (possibly stolen from Zelena).

Dark One Blood (Underworld-specific)

The blood of the Dark One can be used to create a magic portal from the Underworld to other lands to bring the living there (5.16).

Enchanted Trees (Extinct)

Emma first reaches the LWM via an enchanted tree, which was for some reason (probably related to CS Lewis) fashioned into a wardrobe shape. That didn't open a standard portal (1.01), but functioned more as a teleporting vessel (1.01).

The ashes of that same wardrobe when flung into Lake Nostos open the usual vortex shape, with the other end at the wishing well in Storybrooke (2.09). Unless someone finds more enchanted trees, this method of travel appears closed.

A similar enchanted tree was used to bring Emma, Regina, and wish!Robin Hood back from the wish universe (6.11), although the mechanism for using it was slightly different.

Jefferson's Hat (Destroyed)

Jefferson describes himself as a "portal jumper." I infer that he has a native ability that relies on a power object (the hat) to work. The hat's origin is unknown. It appears to be thought-directed and requires magic to function. That magic can be inherent in the user (which is apparently how Jefferson does it in the Enchanted Forest, and how Emma got it to work in 2.01), or provided through the sacrifice of a magical object (as in 1.21).

Under Jefferson's direction, the hat spins, emits purple smoke, and opens into an antechamber where many realms can be accessed by doors. Part of Jefferson's skill set appears to be knowing which door leads to which realm. The same number of people must travel in each direction, although the hat does not differentiate between living and dead people.

The hat is used to reach Wonderland (1.17) from the Enchanted Forest; on the Wonderland side, the portal appears as a looking glass. The implication at the end of 1.17 is that the new hat Emma makes does work, and that Jefferson vanishes through it -- given that he disappears without a trace -- but if that's the case, where he goes and how he gets back to Storybrooke is never explained.

Regina uses the hat to reach the Enchanted Forest from the LWM and retrieve the cursed apple (1.21). Lacking ambient magic for it to work with, she feeds it the ring that contains Daniel's image, resulting in a small portal. When Snow drops the apple after she falls under the sleeping curse, it falls away through this portal and into Jefferson's hand -- which means that it's a time portal as well, technically.

When the wraith attacks her in Storybrooke (2.01), Regina produces the hat to open a portal back to the Enchanted Forest and get rid of the wraith. She cannot make the hat work until Emma touches her arm while she’s holding it, upon which the portal opens. Contradicting Regina's initial lie, Jefferson is certain that the Enchanted Forest still exists (his native navigational skill in operation?), but without the hat he cannot get there.

Rumple says to Jefferson, "Your hat only transports between magical realms; I need to get to a land without magic." (2.05) That makes sense, given that the hat requires magic to operate.
Regina uses the hat to open a portal for Hook (and the late Black Knight Claude) to Wonderland, where he is supposed to kill Cora and bring back her body (2.09).

The hat is destroyed in the fight with the wraith (2.01).

Key (Unknown)

Rumple opens a path to the Land of Untold Stories for Edmond and Charlotte with a magic key (6.02). He sends Jekyll/Hyde there as well (6.04). Another (?) key is used by Lady Tremaine and Clorinda (6.03).

Magic Beans (Unknown)

See also: Creatures > Giants.

Beans are thought-directed. Sometimes beans trigger as soon as they hit a surface; sometimes they don't. At least when they form in water, they look like a brightly-lit blue-walled tunnel (3.01) from the inside.

"If you are to have a happy life, you must go somewhere your father's name cannot follow. This bean can open a portal, take you far away from this land, even this realm" (Spinster to Rumple, 3.08). Malcolm uses the bean to take the two of them to Neverland.

Baelfire calls upon the Blue Fairy aka Reul Ghorm ("blue star" in Gaelic), looking for a way to get rid of Rumple's power (1.19). She gives him a magic bean, "the very last one that is known to our kind. The others got away from us." Baelfire throws down the bean, resulting in a blue light that evolves into a green vortex. Rumple holds back, lets go of Baelfire's wrist, and Baelfire falls into the portal alone.

Commence ret-con (2.04). Mr Smee knows that Rumplestiltskin is in the market for a portal, and he has a bean. The sequence of events is not entirely clear, but it seems that Milah snatched Smee plus bean once she knew that Rumple wanted it (although she says that she doesn't know why he wants it, so the rumor that Smee related to Rumple is apparently not widely told). Violence ensues. Freshly bereft of lover and left hand, Killian uses the bean to take the Jolly Roger to Neverland. On contact with the water, the bean forms a large vortex with a blue center.

When we meet the last of the giants, we find that (again) all of the beans were destroyed, except for one shriveled specimen Anton wears as a reminder of human treachery (2.06), and which Hook manages to nab at some point. Lake Nostos restores the bean's potency, and he and Cora use it to reach Storybrooke aboard the Jolly Roger (2.09). We later find that the one Anton wore was not, after all, again, the last; Anton retains a cutting from the bean fields, which he plants in Storybrooke (2.13).

Information on bean growth is contradictory. "After a century of hard labor, the time of the bean harvest has finally arrived" (Arlo, 2.13). However, Anton has an entire mature field from his cutting in a very short period of time (2.19). (Possibly Arlo was referring to the labor required to repair the war damage?) Regina finds and destroys the field (2.19, 2.20) but keeps a plant for herself. Those beans fall into Owen and Tamara's hands:
  • Tamara uses one to get away from Emma during the fight at the cannery; it takes Neal to the Enchanted Forest (2.21).
  • Owen and Tamara use a second bean to take Henry to Neverland (2.22).
  • A third and final bean is retrieved by Charming and Hook, was supposed to be used to send the Dark Curse self-destruct diamond to a void, was stolen and then returned by Hook, and finally used to take the Jolly Roger and rescue team after Henry. (2.22)
After receiving the message from Baelfire about the new curse (3.20), Hook tracks down a bean and uses it to reach Emma in New York (3.11).

Ruby uses a bean (cultivated by Tiny) to return to the Enchanted Forest to look for more werewolves in S5a.

Magic Mirror (Wonderland-specific)

Rumple gives Regina a mirror that serves as a one-way, single-use portal to Wonderland. It shatters after Cora passes through it (2.02). Will Scarlet and Anastasia steal a similar mirror from Maleficent (OUaTiW) and use it to get to Wonderland. When Henry asks the Genie to speak to Cora via mirror (5.12), Cora is able to use that mirror to come through to the Enchanted Forest; she is returned home the same way.

Magic Slippers (Active, in Ruby's possession)

Jefferson visits Rumple's lab, having apparently been commissioned to retrieve a crystal ball (acquired) and magic slippers (not), which can be used to travel between lands (2.05).

The Wizard of Oz gives the silver slippers to Zelena (3.16), allowing her to travel to the Enchanted Forest. Click your heels together three times and go wherever you wish.

In a piece of irony, Rumple only finds out that she has the slippers after he has brushed off Zelena in favor of Regina to cast the curse; she refuses to give them to him (3.16).

Zelena gives the slippers to Dorothy (3.20) to get her out of Oz and back to fictional-Kansas. Dorothy uses them to return (5.16) upon hearing that Zelena has taken over. Zelena places her under a sleeping curse and takes the slippers (5.18), only to give them to Regina as a sign of goodwill. Ruby uses the slippers to bring herself and Snow back to Oz from the Underworld, with the plan to return Snow to Storybrooke afterward.

Mermaids (Active, whereabouts unknown)

Mermaids have the native ability to travel between realms (3.06). They can create portals at will, but only in water (4.15).

Nautilus (Enchanted Forest, status dubious)

Captain Nemo's submarine can travel between realms by using kraken's blood as a power source. The vessel was damaged and sank in 6.15.

Pan's Shadow (Destroyed)
"I am the sole inhabitant of Neverland" (Shadow, 3.09). Malcolm says it's "a friend, a part of the island. And after I do what it told me -- I let you you go -- it will become a part of me, too. To stay here, I have to believe that I'm young again."

The Shadow is a dark, misty figure with glowing white eyes. It can travel between realms independently, and can carry other people with it. It is not affected by the local presence or absence of magic. The Shadow takes Wendy Darling to Neverland, returns her, and then takes Baelfire (2.21). The Shadow fears fire, and drops Bae when he strikes a match. The Shadow kills by ripping your shadow away (3.01), although what it does with them after is unknown (the word "oblivion" is used).

The Shadow can either conjure illusions, or viewers might see who they most want to see; Rumple thinks he is with Belle in Neverland, but on at least one occasion was actually talking to the Shadow. When Regine chokes "Belle", it resumes its true form in a cloud of dark smoke.

The Shadow can be summoned by a child stating, "I believe." Roland summons it to the Dark Castle in the Enchanted Forest, from which Neal forces it to take him to Neverland (3.03). It can be trapped using a special light Neal devised from a coconut shell (3.07).

Regina forces the shadow to spread over one of the Jolly Roger's sails, carrying the ship out of Neverland (3.09). Pan in Henry's body frees the Shadow, which kills the Blue Fairy (3.10) and attacks the convent (3.11) looking for the Black Fairy's wand.

Tinkerbell traps the Shadow and throws the the trap into a fire, destroying the Shadow (3.11). This returns Blue's shadow, reviving her.

It later appears (6.17) that anyone's shadow can travel between realms, which is pretty handy and something you might think someone would have figured out sooner.

Pegasus Sail (Destroyed)

A sail made of pegasus feathers allows the Jewel of the Realm to fly and traverse realms (3.05). After Liam's death, Killian destroys the sail.

Wishing Star (Single-use)

Elsa and Anna’s parents got it from Blackbeard, and Elsa later found it among her things and gave it to Anna (4.01). When Elsa uttered a wish to be reunited with her sister, Anna and Kristoff were transported to Storybrooke (4.09).

White Rabbit (Active, whereabouts unknown)

Like mermaids, the White Rabbit has a native ability to tunnel between realms (OUaTiW). Any restrictions or limits on this ability are not mentioned, but we only see the rabbit move between Wonderland, Alice’s London, and Storybrooke.

Cora uses the white rabbit to visit Regina in the Enchanted Forest (4.20).

Underworld Clock (Underworld-specific, single-use)

When the curse on Hades’ heart is broken by Zelena, the clock hands begin to spin wildly. A one-time portal opens between the Underworld and Storybrooke; it closes at sundown.

Time Portal

Time travel is widely supposed to be impossible. Zelena is able to create a time portal in 3b using the following ingredients:
  • The hilt of Charming's sword, after he uses it to defeat the doppelganger representing his fear of failing as a father (3.14)
  • A golden brain formed out of thread spun by Rumplestiltskin
  • Regina's heart
  • Snow and Charming's newborn baby
Zelena intends to go back in time and remove Eva's interference with Cora's planned marriage to Leopold. Her death triggers the portal to open, and Emma and Killian end up traveling back to just before the moment Snow and Charming first meet. Unlike other portals we have seen, the time portal is orange.

She previously experimented toward the goal of creating such a portal using the brain of the Scarecrow from Oz (5.16).
