Heart Magic

Heart-taking and related events. These entries are pretty much in chronological order.

There has been a lot of fandom discussion on this subject and the apparent contradictions raised along the way, such as how Regina was able to administer True Love's Kiss to Henry while she did not have her heart, when not having a heart was previously established as preventing one from feeling love (apparently she feels things with "her whole soul"?). This is one of the areas of world-building where the writers have played fast and loose.

Regina removes and crushes her father Henry's heart, adds it to the Dark Curse cauldron (1.02).

Once taken, a heart can be stored indefinitely, used to cause pain to its owner, or to kill them at a distance. Regina does both to Graham (1.07). As did her mother before her (2.05) Regina has a collection of them, which were brought over with her vault as part of the curse. Walking around heartless has an emotionally deadening effect.

Cora crushes Daniel's heart (1.18).

Rumplestiltskin grabs Killian's heart but leaves it in place, and crushes Milah's heart (2.04).

Cora rips out the hearts of the survivors in the village (2.05). They appear to be dead, but she later reanimates them as zombies (2.08) of a slow, shambling type while she holds a glowing heart.

Animal hearts can be taken (2.05), as Rumple does with the unicorn. "When you take a heart, it becomes enchanted, stronger than a normal heart. You're not hurting the beast, you're controlling it." Victor believed that he could use a heart transformed by magic in his procedure to bring back the dead; it works, albeit with side effects (2.05). Regina takes and crushes the heart of Rumple's new student (2.05), regaining her position with him.

Regina enchants Hook's hook to enable him to use it for one heart removal (2.09, ret-conned in 5.01 to involve a potion). He takes Aurora's heart (2.08) and gives it to Cora. Cora uses it to control Aurora, speaking through her to Snow and the others. It's not clear whether Aurora even knows that her heart is missing at first. Cora continues to control her, getting her to trap Emma, Snow, etc. in Rumplestiltskin's cell. Mulan is able to return her heart (2.09). Hook applies a potion to his hook (5.01) to re-enable heart removal and tries for Zelena’s, but she has cast a protection spell on herself beforehand.

Cora has removed her own heart for safekeeping in her vault, and demonstrates how much pain you can cause that way on Hook (2.09). She learned the technique from Rumple and removed her heart the night before her marriage to Prince Henry, seeing her love for Rumple as an impediment to her ambition. She says "You are the only man I ever truly loved," although there never appeared to be any sign of their kisses breaking his curse (2.16).

Cora attempts to take Snow's heart at Lake Nostos, but Emma interposes herself (2.09). Although widespread fandom theory held that her heard could never be taken because she is the child of true love, this was proven incorrect; both Regina and Hades remove Emma’s heart in the Underworld (5.20).

Cora takes Johanna's heart and threatens to kill her, then replaces it (2.15). (And kills her anyway.)

Snow kills Cora by using the candle to curse her heart, and then giving the heart to an unsuspecting Regina, who places it back inside Cora. "She can't love you, you know. She doesn't have her heart" (2.16).

Hearts can be returned from behind as well as in front of the subject (2.16).

Regina speaks to Graham's heart to pass information and give him commands (2.17).

Snow offers her heart to heart to Regina, who removes it briefly but returns it. Hearts visibly reflect the spiritual condition of the whole person, acquiring dark spots (Snow's now has one) as a result of evil deeds (2.17).

Rumple takes and crushes Tamara's heart (3.01).

Regina removes her own heart and offers it to Tinkerbell (3.03). She has "a small, hard, dark heart" due to her lifelong choice of revenge over hope.

Regina removes a Lost Boy's heart and controls him in order to communicate with Henry (3.05).
Pan does something to Henry's hand that allows him to remove his own heart (3.08). Henry puts it into Pan. A green magical shockwave explodes out of Pan. Regina recovers the heart and restores it to Henry, and places a spell on him that prevents anyone from taking his heart again (3.09).

Pan uses Felix's heart to cast the Dark Curse 2 (3.11).

Regina removes her own heart to dull the pain of having lost Henry (3.12), but Snow convinces her to put it back.

Regina removes her heart to make sure Zelena can't take it during their duel (3.16) and gives it to Robin Hood for safekeeping. Rumplestiltskin retrieves it for Zelena (3.18); Regina has somehow ensured that it cannot be used to control her, although it could still kill her. She tells Robin that she can still feel without it, "just not fully" (3.19).

Snow uses Charming's heart to cast the Dark Curse, but then gives him half of her own to keep him alive (3.19).

Regina removes Marian's heart to keep the freezing curse from reaching it and killing her (4.03).

Rumple removes Killian's heart (4.08); to separate himself from the dagger requires the heart of someone who knew him before he became the Dark One (unless Ingrid is lying, of course). Dialog elsewhere in this episode references Snow's dark spot; Killian's heart is notably pure-looking on first glance but in 4.11 they added dark spots. Being heartless renders Killian immune to the Spell of Shattered Sight (4.10). Emma returns it after Rumple is exiled from Storybrooke (4.11).

Cruella refers in passing to that time Regina ripped out the heart of every villager in the north or south woods, one of the two (4.14).

Snow wonders if the dark spot on her heart is due not to killing Cora after all, but to their actions with Maleficent (4.16).

Regina removes Belle’s heart for leverage over Rumple, to prevent him warning Zelena about her planned rescue mission (4.18). Rumple’s own heart is revealed to be almost entirely blackened by “centuries of dark deeds;” soon he will completely lose his ability to love. Rumple and Will retrieve Belle’s heart from Maleficent, who is guarding it; Rumple replaces it and declares himself unworthy of her (4.19).

Regina removes and crushes a random peasant’s heart for getting married on royal land without permission (4.20).

In Isaac's AU-verse, Snow has removed Charming’s heart and uses it to control him, and she crushes Doc’s heart (4.22/23).

The Apprentice removes Rumple’s heart and draws the darkness out of it, leaving his heart white (4.22).

In OUaTiW, Cora removes Will’s heart at his request, to ease the pain of having been abandoned by Anastasia. She uses it to control him as her Knave until Alice recovers it. Will leaves his heart outside his body; it is recovered by Alice, then returned to Will by Jafar.

Emma removes Merida’s heart and nearly crushes it in order to gain control over the will o’ the wisp; others intervene, and she replaces it (5.01).

Zelena has put a protection spell on her heart, preventing it from being removed by Hook (5.01).

Emma removes Merida’s heart again and commands her to make Rumple into a hero (5.04). She returns the heart as part of the deal with Rumple to draw Excalibur (5.06).

Emma removes Violet’s heart in Camelot and orders her to break Henry’s (metaphorical) heart (5.05).

Nimue removes and crushes Vortigan’s heart (5.07).

Rumple removes and crushes Fendrakes heart (5.14 flashback).

Regina is unable to remove Emma’s heart when she wants to split it with Hook. The explanation suggested by the following scene is that it’s because her name is on a stone in the UW graveyard (5.14).

Regina removes and splits Emma’s heart in an attempt to bring Hook, back, but he’s been dead for too long for that to work. Hades removes Emma’s heart, which is weighed on a scale before she and Hook can approach the ambrosia tree. Pan threatens to remove Zelena’s heart; reminder that she has it protected. Rumple removes Robin Hood’s heart but gives it back and gives Pan a fake (5.20).

Regina removes and crushes her own evil half’s heart (5.23) but this does not kill her. The evil half takes the Dragon’s heart. She later uses the heart to command the Dragon to kill Emma and Nice Regina (6.08), giving Henry the choice between crushing the heart and watching them die. Henry saves Emma and Regina and the heart, but the Dragon's current whereabouts are not known.

Regina's evil half takes the Count of Monte Cristo's heart and sends him to ostensibly kill Snow and Charming, secretly so that Regina's good half will kill him and have her own heart darkened. The good half threatens to rip out the heart of the evil half, which she has already done, so... weird. (6.02)

Regina takes Snow's shared heart out of Snow and Charming and casts a special sleeping curse using it, one which only allows one of them to be awake at one time (6.07).

Regina crushes the hearts of the wish-verse Snow and Charming (6.10).

Regina removes her own heart and that of her doppelganger, gives them both an equal portion of darkness and light, and puts them back. (6.14)

The Black Fairy removes Gideon's heart and uses it to command him to kill Emma. (6.16)
